Shop Whole House Water Softener Systems by Capacity
1–2 people, light hardness
These compact water softener systems suit a single person or couple on moderately hard city water. They regenerate more often than larger units, but the upfront cost is the lowest in the lineup. Browse the 24,000 Grain and 32,000 Grain collections.
3–4 people, average city water
The most common household size of a residential water softener in this range covers a typical family of 10–15 grains per gallon (GPG) municipal water without regenerating more than once a week.
Large homes, very hard water
Larger households, multiple bathrooms, or well water above 15–20 GPG call for more resin volume so the house water softener system isn't regenerating daily. Shop 64,000 Grain, 80,000 Grain, and 96,000 Grain systems.
24/7 Soft Water
A twin-tank whole house water softener and filtration system keeps one tank in service while the other regenerates, so you're never without soft water ideal for large families, 5+ bathroom homes, or anyone who can't tolerate downtime. See the Dual 120,000 Grain system.
How to Choose the Right Residential Water Softener
Calculate Your Softener Size
Sizing a water softener system comes down to one formula:
people in the home × 75 gallons per day × your water hardness in grains per gallon (GPG) = daily grain requirement
Multiply that by 7 for your weekly capacity target, then round up to the nearest standard size. For example, a family of four on 10 GPG water needs roughly 21,000 grains a week comfortably covered by a 24,000 or 32,000 grain unit. Use our free softener sizing guide to run your own numbers, or reach out and we'll size it with you.
Use the free sizing guide →Quick sizing chart:
| Household Size | Light Hardness (under 10 GPG) | Hard / Very Hard (10–20+ GPG) |
|---|---|---|
| 1–2 people | 24,000 grain | 32,000 grain |
| 3–4 people | 32,000–40,000 grain | 48,000 grain |
| 5+ people | 48,000–64,000 grain | 64,000–96,000 grain |
Pick Your Control Valve: Fleck 5600SXT vs 2510SXT vs 9100SXT
Most whole house water softener guides do not tell you this. But the valve you choose affects performance as much as grain capacity does. All three are genuine metered (on-demand) valves, meaning they track actual water use and regenerate only when needed, rather than on a fixed timer, a difference that typically cuts salt and water use substantially compared to older timer-based softeners.
5600 Series
The Fleck 5600 Series is the most widely used residential valve and covers most 1–4 bathroom homes.
Shop 5600 Series →2510 Series
The Fleck 2510 Series steps up to a stronger backwash and higher flow rate for larger resin beds and homes with multiple fixtures running at once.
Shop 2510 Series →9100 Series
The Fleck 9100 Series is the twin-tank option, alternating between two tanks so you always have soft water on tap, even mid-regeneration.
Shop 9000 & 9100 Series →Within each series you can also choose mechanical (dial-set, no power needed) or SXT digital (programmable, metered) control heads; mechanical is simpler and rugged, digital gives you more precise regeneration settings and a display.
Choose Your Resin: 8% vs 10% Crosslink vs Fine Mesh
Resin quality is the other differentiator most competitors skip.
8% Crosslink
Standard 8% crosslink resin performs well for most city water applications.
10% Crosslink
10% crosslink resin has a denser bead structure that resists chlorine oxidation better, which matters most on chlorinated municipal water; it generally holds up longer before needing replacement.
Fine Mesh
Fine mesh resin uses smaller, denser beads with more surface area, which makes it the better choice for well water carrying iron, since standard beads clog faster once iron gets into the resin bed. Browse resin options in our Softening Resin collection.
Browse Softening Resin →Hard Water Problems a Water Softener System Solves
Scale Buildup in Pipes, Water Heaters & Appliances
Calcium and magnesium in hard water precipitate out as scale, coating the inside of pipes and water heater elements and making appliances work harder over time.
Dry Skin, Dull Hair & Faded Laundry
Hard water reacts with soap to form a scum that leaves a film on skin and hair and dulls fabric colors instead of rinsing cleanly away.
Higher Energy & Detergent Costs
Independent testing funded by the Water Quality Research Foundation found that softened water lets households cut laundry and dishwasher detergent use by roughly half while getting the same or better cleaning results.
Water Softeners for Well Water and Iron
Standard resin handles trace iron, but once clear-water (ferrous) iron climbs higher, it fouls standard beads and shortens resin life fast. A fine mesh system with extra capacity is built specifically to keep working where a standard softener would struggle.
Iron Pro Fine Mesh Systems
Standard resin handles trace iron, but once clear-water (ferrous) iron climbs higher, it fouls standard beads and shortens resin life fast. That's where a fine mesh system with extra capacity earns its keep; it's built specifically to keep working where a standard softener would struggle.
Check out Iron Removal media and the full Iron & Sulfur Filters lineup if your well water needs dedicated iron treatment ahead of or instead of a standard softener.
Softener with Upflow Carbon Filter Packages
Pairing a softener with an upflow carbon filter covers both sides of the water quality equation: the softener's resin handles hardness minerals, while carbon media removes chlorine taste and odor. Running carbon ahead of the softener also protects the resin bed from chlorine exposure, extending its working life.
Maintenance, Salt Use & Replacement
Adding Salt & Cleaning the Brine Tank
Most households spend somewhere in the range of $60–$300 a year on softener salt, depending on water hardness, household size, and how often the system regenerates. Check salt levels monthly and top off before the tank runs empty to avoid a "salt bridge" that stops regeneration from working properly.
When to Replace Resin or Buy a Loaded Replacement Tank
Softening resin typically lasts 10–15 years under normal conditions, longer with 10% crosslink resin on chlorinated water. If soft water performance starts slipping and the control valve still checks out, a pre-loaded Loaded Replacement Tank is a budget-friendly fix swap the tank instead of replacing the entire system.
FAQs
What size water softener do I need for my home?
Multiply the number of people in your home by 75 gallons per day, then by your water hardness in grains per gallon (GPG). Multiply that by 7 for weekly capacity. As a rule of thumb: 32,000 grain suits 1–3 people, 48,000 grain suits 4–5 people, and 64,000+ grain suits larger households or very hard/iron-heavy water. Use our free sizing guide for an exact match.
How much does a whole house water softener system cost?
Our whole house systems typically run about $700–$1,300 depending on grain capacity, control valve, and resin type factory-direct with free shipping. Because these systems are built for DIY installation, you can also skip the $300–$1,500 professional install fee that dealer-installed brands build into their pricing.
Can I install a water softener myself?
Yes. If you're comfortable with basic plumbing, most installs take 2–4 hours. Every system ships with a bypass valve and instructions, and our free lifetime tech support can walk you through setup and programming your Fleck or AFW control valve.
What's the difference between a water softener and a whole house water filter?
A water softener uses ion-exchange resin to remove hardness minerals (calcium and magnesium) that cause scale. A whole house filter uses carbon media to remove chlorine, chemicals, tastes, and odors. Many homes benefit from a combo system that does both.
How long does a water softener last, and when should I replace the resin?
Quality control valves last 15–20 years, and softener resin typically lasts 10–15 years (less on heavily chlorinated water with standard 8% resin). If soft water performance drops, a pre-loaded replacement resin tank is an affordable fix without replacing the whole system.
Will a water softener remove iron from well water?
Standard softeners handle trace iron only. For well water with higher iron levels, a fine mesh resin system softens water and removes iron in one unit, where a standard softener alone would struggle.
