What a Micron Rating Means & How to Choose?

A micron rating tells you the smallest particle size a filter is built to catch. The lower the number, the finer the filtration, but also the faster it can clog if it's not protected by a coarser pre-filter upstream. Water filter replacement parts are usually staged: a coarser sediment filter goes first to catch sand and grit, protecting a finer filter or carbon block installed after it.

Well water usually carries more sediment and mineral load than treated municipal water, which means sediment and carbon cartridges on a well system often need replacing closer to the 6-month mark, while city water systems can often stretch toward 12 months. How often should I replace my water filter?

What does the micron rating mean, and which do I need?

The micron rating is the smallest particle size a filter is built to trap. A lower number means finer filtration. A 20-micron filter catches sand and rust, a 5-micron filter handles finer sediment, and a 1-micron or below filter targets very fine particles and cysts. Run a coarser pre-filter first to protect your finer filters downstream.

Can I use a compatible replacement filter instead of the OEM one?

Yes. As long as the size, micron rating, and media type match your system, a quality compatible filter does the same job often at a lower cost than the original brand. Look for filters made with NSF/ANSI-tested materials for added peace of mind.

Can I clean and reuse a water filter cartridge?

Most cartridges are single-use and shouldn't be reused, since reusing them reduces filtration performance and risks introducing contamination. Pleated sediment filters are the main exception; some are rinsable and can be reused for a limited number of cycles before replacement.

Is replacing a water filter something I can do myself?

Yes. Most replacements simply twist or snap into place: shut off the inlet and outlet valves, relieve pressure, swap the cartridge, and run water to flush the system. Carbon filters specifically should be flushed for several minutes to clear loose carbon fines before regular use.
