Orlando's Water Is Harder Than Most People Think — and Softer Than Most Sites Claim.

The Orlando Utilities Commission publishes its own average: 129 ppm, or 7 grains per gallon, drawn from the Lower Floridan Aquifer and ozone-treated since 1957. That's "hard" by industry classification — enough to scale a water heater over time — but it is not the 17-grain figure some retailers advertise. Step outside OUC's 200-square-mile territory into Orange, Seminole, or Osceola County well water and the number climbs fast. We size to your actual utility.

OUC stopped adding fluoride on July 1, 2025. This one is confirmed by the utility itself. OUC states it stopped adding fluoride to drinking water on July 1, 2025, per state law: Governor DeSantis signed SB 700, the "Florida Farm Bill," on May 20, 2025, banning certain additives including fluoride, effective July 1. Orange County Utilities did the same across all seven of its water treatment sites. Naturally occurring fluoride remains in Florida groundwater at an average of about 0.14 mg/L, and OUC's water quality laboratory continues monitoring it. What this means for you: if fluoride reduction was driving your purchase, that reason is gone — 0.14 mg/L is a fraction of the level that would justify a dedicated fluoride filter. Redirect the budget toward hardness and taste-and-odor, which is where Orlando's actual money is. Call 785-661-2241 before you buy the wrong thing.

Six Reasons Orlando Tap Water Needs Treatment

The most useful thing to know about Orlando hardness is which utility you're on. OUC serves the City of Orlando and portions of Orange County across roughly 200 square miles from seven water plants, all drawing the Lower Floridan Aquifer. Step outside that footprint and hardness generally goes up.

?

7 GPG Is Still Hard Water

Seven grains per gallon is the industry threshold for hard water, and Central Florida's limestone geology puts OUC right on it. That's not a crisis — but it's enough calcium carbonate to build measurable scale inside a water heater over five to ten years, spot glassware, leave film on shower doors, and push soap and detergent consumption up. A water softener system is the standard fix.
See water softener systems →
?️

Everything Outside OUC Runs Harder

The Orlando metro is not one water system. Orange County Utilities runs seven treatment sites of its own. Winter Park and Maitland run their own. Apopka, Ocoee, and the rural fringe include a lot of private Floridan Aquifer wells with no treatment at all. Most Orlando-area homes with a visible hard water problem are not on OUC — that's the first question we'll ask you.
See water softener systems →
?

Hydrogen Sulfide Is Why OUC Ozonates

Ozone is the strongest disinfectant available and OUC uses it specifically to remove unpleasant tastes and odors — chiefly the hydrogen sulfide that comes naturally with Floridan Aquifer groundwater. That tells you exactly what's in the raw water, which matters enormously if you're on a private well in Apopka or Christmas with no ozone contactor between you and the aquifer. An iron & sulfur filter covers what ozone doesn't.
See iron & sulfur filters →

Chlorine Taste Is Orlando's Most Common Complaint

Even with ozone doing the heavy lifting on taste and odor at the plant, chlorine residual has to be maintained through distribution for public health, and Orlando residents consistently report a distinct chlorine taste at the tap. A carbon filter fixes this cheaply, at point of entry or under the kitchen sink.
See carbon systems →
☢️

Radium in Deep Limestone Groundwater

The Lower Floridan Aquifer runs through hundreds of feet of ancient limestone and dolomite. Naturally occurring radionuclides are part of that geology across Florida, which is why point-of-use reverse osmosis is the standard recommendation for drinking and cooking water statewide, independent of your hardness number.

?️

Lead in Pre-1986 Orlando Plumbing

OUC runs corrosion control and its source water is not a lead source. Homes in College Park, Delaney Park, Lake Eola Heights, and older parts of Winter Park that predate the 1986 solder ban can still leach lead at the fixture. An NSF-certified RO system at the kitchen tap removes it at the point where it matters.

How Hard Is Your Orlando Area's Water?

OUC serves the City of Orlando and portions of Orange County across roughly 200 square miles from seven water plants. Step outside that footprint — into Orange County Utilities territory, Winter Park's municipal system, Seminole County, or a private well — and both the source depth and the treatment change, and hardness generally goes up.

Water Softener Systems for Orlando Homes

At OUC's published 7 grains per gallon, a water softener system is a value purchase rather than an emergency — you're buying appliance life, cleaner glassware, and a lot less detergent. Outside the OUC footprint, where hardness climbs into double digits, it stops being optional. Both cases start with the same question: which utility serves your address?

Salt-Based Water Softener System vs. Salt-Free Water Conditioner — Which Fits an Orlando Home?

Salt-Based Water Softener System

  • Physically removes calcium and magnesium by ion exchange
  • Eliminates scale rather than just preventing adhesion
  • The clear answer above roughly 10 GPG — most of Orange County outside OUC
  • Demand-metered valves are salt- and water-efficient
  • Best return where hardness is highest: well-water homes see it fastest
  • Adds sodium to the water
  • Requires salt purchase and a brine tank

Salt-Free Water Conditioner for Hard Water

  • No salt, no brine, no discharge, no sodium
  • Conditions hardness so minerals don't bond to surfaces
  • Genuinely competitive at OUC's 7 GPG — this is the Florida city where salt-free makes the most sense
  • Nothing to refill, no regeneration cycle, no wastewater
  • Does not remove calcium and magnesium
  • Underdelivers on 15+ GPG well water — don't use it in Christmas or Bithlo

Solution #2

Water Purification RO Systems for Orlando Drinking Water

Orlando's hardness number is modest. Its drinking-water contaminants are the same ones every Floridan Aquifer city has: radium from the limestone, disinfection byproducts from the distribution system, and lead from older plumbing. A water purification RO system handles all three at the tap, and a softener handles none of them.

Water Conditioners for Hard Water — The Strong Play in Orlando

Orlando is the one city of the four where we'd genuinely steer many customers toward conditioning rather than ion exchange. At OUC's 7 grains per gallon, water conditioners for hard water deliver most of the practical benefit with no salt, no brine discharge, and no sodium added to the water.

Why Orlando Homeowners Choose AFW Filters

Since 1998, we've matched thousands of homeowners to the right system for their specific water — not a generic recommendation.

01

We'll Tell You If Your Water Isn't That Hard

OUC publishes 129 ppm — 7 grains per gallon. Several competitor pages advertise Orlando at 17 GPG, which would be more than double the utility's own figure. We size off OUC's number, and if a salt-free conditioner is the right call for your house, we'll say so even though it isn't our most expensive product.

02

We Ask Which Utility Serves You First

OUC covers roughly 200 square miles from seven plants. Orange County Utilities, Winter Park, Maitland, Seminole County, and thousands of private Floridan Aquifer wells cover the rest of the metro — and those run harder. Getting this question wrong is the single most common way Orlando homeowners buy the wrong system.

Very well packaged order. The detailed instructions are very thorough and helpful. Everything works as it should. One item was in back order and it was communicated well. The bracket they use for big blue is well made and strict compared to ones I have had in the past.

Orlando Water Filter FAQ

Not sure what you need?

The first question we'll ask is which utility serves your address. Call us before you order.

785-661-2241
Mon–Fri, 8am–4pm CT
How hard is Orlando tap water, really?
The Orlando Utilities Commission publishes its own average: 129 parts per million, or 7 grains per gallon. That's "hard" by industry classification — it's the threshold — but it is meaningfully softer than Miami, Tampa, or Jacksonville, and it is far below the 17 GPG figure some water treatment sites advertise for Orlando. If you're inside OUC's service area, 7 GPG is your working number. If you're on Orange County Utilities, Winter Park's system, Seminole County, or a private well, expect higher. We'll confirm which one applies before recommending anything.
Do I actually need a water softener system in Orlando?
Honestly, it depends on where you are. At OUC's 7 GPG you'll get real value from softening or conditioning — less scale in the water heater, cleaner glassware, noticeably less soap and detergent — but it's a comfort-and-efficiency purchase, not an emergency. On a private Floridan Aquifer well in Apopka or east Orange County at 15–20 GPG, it's not optional. Call us with your address and we'll tell you which situation you're in, including if the answer is "you probably don't need our biggest unit."
Is a water conditioner for hard water enough for Orlando, or do I need a full softener?
Orlando is the Florida city where we most often recommend a water conditioner for hard water over a salt-based system. At 7 GPG, conditioning prevents the scale adhesion that causes most visible problems, without salt purchases, brine discharge, sodium in your water, or a drain connection — which makes it especially practical for condos and townhomes downtown. Above about 10 GPG, which covers most of the metro outside OUC, ion exchange is the better answer because only it physically removes calcium and magnesium.
Why does Orlando water taste like chlorine if OUC uses ozone?
Both are true and they do different jobs. OUC treats with ozone — the strongest disinfectant available — largely to remove tastes and odors, including the hydrogen sulfide that comes naturally with Floridan Aquifer groundwater. But a chlorine residual still has to be maintained throughout the distribution system to keep water safe on its way to your house, and that's what you're tasting at the tap. A whole house carbon system removes it at the point of entry, or an under-sink RO system handles it just for drinking and cooking.
OUC stopped adding fluoride. Should I change what I buy?
Yes — take fluoride filtration off your list. OUC confirmed it stopped adding fluoride on July 1, 2025 under SB 700, the Florida Farm Bill signed May 20, 2025, which bans certain water additives. Orange County Utilities stopped across all seven of its treatment sites too. What remains is naturally occurring fluoride, which OUC reports averages about 0.14 mg/L in Florida groundwater — far below any level that would justify a dedicated fluoride reduction system. Put that budget toward hardness or taste-and-odor instead.
If I have a water softener system, do I still need a water purification RO system?
Yes. A water softener system removes calcium and magnesium by ion exchange and nothing else. It does not remove radium, lead from pre-1986 solder joints, trihalomethanes, or chlorine taste. A water purification RO system under the kitchen sink removes the large majority of all of those at the point where you drink and cook. In Orlando specifically — where hardness is modest but Floridan Aquifer radium and distribution-system byproducts are the same as everywhere else in Florida — the RO system is arguably the higher-value of the two purchases.
I'm on a private well outside the OUC grid. What changes?
Nearly everything. OUC's ozone contactors strip hydrogen sulfide before water leaves the plant; on a well in Apopka, Christmas, or Bithlo, nothing sits between the limestone and your tap. You're typically looking at a treatment train rather than one box: an air injection iron and sulfur filter to oxidize out the rotten-egg smell, iron, and manganese; a water softener system sized for actual well hardness, which can run past 20 GPG; and UV disinfection for bacteria. Get a well water test first, then call us with the results.
Does AFWFilters ship water softeners and filters to Orlando?
Yes — free shipping on orders over $100 to every Orlando-area ZIP, including OUC's service territory, Orange County Utilities areas, Winter Park, Maitland, Apopka, Ocoee, Winter Garden, Lake Nona, and the Seminole and Osceola County fringes. Most orders ship in 1–2 business days with written installation instructions, programming guides, and video walkthroughs, plus phone support at 785-661-2241.

Tell Us Your Address. We'll Tell You Which Utility — and Which System.

Whether you're downtown on OUC at 7 grains wondering if you need anything at all, in Winter Park with older plumbing and harder water, or out in Apopka on a private well fighting sulfur and iron — we'll size the water softener system, water conditioner for hard water, or water purification RO system to your actual utility. And if the answer is a smaller system than you expected, we'll say that too.
