Your Biscayne Aquifer Water Is Already Over the New PFAS Limit.

Miami-Dade Water and Sewer Department (WASD) pulls from the Biscayne Aquifer and lime-softens it — but PFOS and PFOA in the distribution system have been reported above the EPA's 4 ppt legal limit set in 2024, alongside chloramine disinfection byproducts and limestone hardness that still coats your water heater. WASD has until 2029 to comply. Your kitchen tap doesn't have to wait. We match every Miami home to the right water softener system, water purification RO system, or water conditioner.

⚠️ Regulatory Update

Florida Banned Water Fluoridation — Miami-Dade Stopped in 2025

Governor DeSantis signed SB 700 (the "Florida Farm Bill") on May 15, 2025, barring Florida water systems from adding fluoride and certain other additives. It took effect July 1, 2025. Miami-Dade had already moved first — county commissioners voted to end fluoridation in May 2025, overriding the mayor's veto. Naturally occurring fluoride in Florida groundwater remains, averaging about 0.14 mg/L statewide.

What this means for your filtration: if you were previously running a fluoride-reduction filter on Miami water, your treatment priorities have shifted. Hardness, PFAS, and chloramine byproducts are now the contaminants worth spending money on. Call 785-661-2241 and we'll rebuild your system spec around what's actually in your water today.

What's Actually in Miami Tap Water

Miami-Dade WASD lime-softens Biscayne Aquifer water at the plant, but PFAS, disinfection byproducts, and residual hardness all still reach the tap.

Contaminant Severity Source
PFOS / PFOA ("forever chemicals") CRITICAL AFFF firefighting foam — Miami International Airport, Homestead Air Reserve Base, industrial sites over the Biscayne Aquifer.
Hard Water Scale (10–17 GPG) HIGH Limestone and dolomite in the Biscayne Aquifer; lime softening reduces but does not eliminate it.
HAA5 & TTHMs HIGH Chloramine disinfection reacting with organic matter — historically elevated at the John E. Preston plant.
Chloramines MODERATE Chlorine + ammonia secondary disinfectant used system-wide by WASD.
Lead (pre-1986 homes) MODERATE Lead solder and service lines in older Miami housing stock, not the source water.
Sodium & Chloride MODERATE Saltwater intrusion pressure on coastal Biscayne Aquifer wellfields.

How Hard Is Your Miami Neighborhood's Water?

Miami-Dade doesn't have one hardness number — it has three plants and a handful of satellite systems, each with a different source blend and a different degree of lime softening. The Alexander Orr Jr. plant blends Biscayne with more mineral-rich Floridan Aquifer water. Hialeah and John E. Preston draw solely from the Biscayne Aquifer; Preston runs enhanced softening because its raw water carries more organic matter. South Dade runs its own smaller plants plus a Hialeah RO facility.

Sub-Area Neighborhoods Typical Hardness
Hialeah–Preston service area Hialeah, Miami Springs, Miami Lakes, Opa-locka, Doral 13–17 GPG
Alexander Orr service area (south of SW 8th St) Coral Gables, Coconut Grove, South Miami, Kendall 12–16 GPG
Central & Downtown Downtown, Brickell, Little Havana, Wynwood, Edgewater 12–16 GPG
South Dade Water Supply System Cutler Bay, Palmetto Bay, Homestead, Florida City, Redland 10–20 GPG
Coastal / barrier island Miami Beach, Key Biscayne, Surfside, Bal Harbour 11–15 GPG

Legend: 0–3.5 GPG soft · 3.5–7 GPG moderate · 7–10.5 GPG hard · 10.5+ GPG very hard. Every Miami-Dade service area sits in the "very hard" band or at its edge. National average: ~10 GPG.

Six Reasons Miami Tap Water Needs Treatment

☣️
01 — Critical

PFOS and PFOA Above the Federal Limit Reported

Reported PFOS and PFOA concentrations in Miami-Dade's distribution water exceed the 4 parts-per-trillion MCL EPA finalized in April 2024. WASD has a compliance deadline of 2029, possibly 2031, while it engineers plant upgrades. The contamination traces to decades of AFFF firefighting foam use at MIA, Homestead Air Reserve Base, and industrial sites over a shallow, permeable aquifer.
See RO systems →
?
02 — High

Limestone Hardness That Survives Lime Softening

WASD adds quicklime to precipitate calcium and magnesium before water leaves the plant. That helps — it does not produce soft water. What reaches your home still deposits scale inside water heaters, cuts efficiency, and shortens appliance life.
See water softener systems →
⚗️
03 — High

HAA5 and Trihalomethanes from Chloramination

WASD disinfects with chloramine — chlorine combined with ammonia. Where that meets organic matter, it forms haloacetic acids and trihalomethanes. EPA's own historical monitoring recorded substantially higher HAA5 at John E. Preston than at Alexander Orr. Standard carbon underperforms against chloramines; catalytic carbon is the right media.
See catalytic carbon systems →
?
04 — Moderate

Chloramine Taste and Odor

The chemical taste Miami residents describe isn't chlorine — it's chloramine, deliberately more stable and longer-lasting in the distribution system. That stability is good for public health and bad for your coffee. It also survives most pitcher and refrigerator filters.

05 — Moderate

Lead in Pre-1986 Miami Plumbing

Miami's source water is not the lead problem — its older housing stock is. Homes built before the 1986 solder ban can leach lead at the tap from solder joints and fixtures regardless of how clean the water was at the plant. Point-of-use RO at the kitchen sink is the direct fix.
See drinking RO systems →
?
06 — Moderate

Saltwater Intrusion and Sodium

The Biscayne Aquifer is shallow and coastal, and the saline front has been a documented management concern in the Hialeah–Miami Springs wellfield area for decades. Sodium and chloride pressure affects taste and matters on a sodium-restricted diet — including households running a salt-based softener, which adds sodium of its own.

Water Softener Systems for Miami Homes

WASD's lime softening gets the worst of the calcium out at the plant. A properly sized water softener system at your house finishes the job — no scale in the heater, no film on the shower glass, no chalk ring in the kettle — and typically pays for itself in appliance life within two to three years.

Salt-Based Softener vs. Salt-Free Conditioner — Which Fits a Miami Home?

Salt-Based Water Softener System

  • Physically removes calcium and magnesium by ion exchange
  • Eliminates scale completely — not just prevents adhesion
  • The proven answer at 12+ GPG, which covers most of Miami-Dade
  • Demand-metered valves are salt-efficient and water-conserving
  • Best return on investment: 2–3 years in appliance protection
  • Adds sodium to the water — worth weighing on a coastal aquifer already under salinity pressure
  • Requires periodic salt purchase and a brine tank

Salt-Free Water Conditioner for Hard Water

  • No salt, no brine discharge, no sodium added
  • Conditions hardness minerals so they don't bond to pipes and fixtures
  • Good fit for sodium-restricted households and condo installs
  • Zero wastewater from regeneration
  • Does not remove calcium and magnesium from the water
  • Scale prevention, not scale elimination — a less dramatic result on 16 GPG water

Why Miami Homeowners Choose AFWFilters

Since 1998, we've matched thousands of homeowners to the right system for their specific water — not a generic recommendation.

01

We Know That "Miami Water" Means Three Different Plants

Hialeah, John E. Preston, and Alexander Orr Jr. don't produce identical water. Preston has historically run higher on haloacetic acids; Orr blends in Floridan Aquifer water; South Dade runs on its own smaller systems. We ask which plant serves you before we recommend a grain capacity.

02

We Track the PFAS Compliance Clock

EPA set a 4 ppt limit for PFOS and PFOA in April 2024. Miami-Dade has until 2029 to meet it. We can tell you exactly which of our systems are rated for PFAS reduction and which are not — including the honest answer that a water softener system is not one of them.

Miami Water Filter FAQ

Still not sure?

Our experts read WASD water quality reports for a living. Call before you order.

785-661-2241
Mon–Fri, 8am–4pm CT
How hard is Miami tap water — and does it vary by neighborhood?
Yes, it varies, and by more than most people expect. Miami-Dade WASD treats water at three regional plants — Hialeah, John E. Preston, and Alexander Orr Jr. — plus the smaller South Dade systems and a reverse osmosis plant in Hialeah. The number that actually applies to your house is in the total hardness row of the WASD annual Water Quality Report. Call us with your ZIP code and we'll look it up with you.
Does Miami tap water contain PFAS?
Yes. PFOS and PFOA have been reported in Miami-Dade's distribution water above the 4 parts-per-trillion MCL EPA finalized in April 2024. WASD has a compliance deadline of 2029, with a possible extension to 2031, while it upgrades treatment. The contamination sources are consistent with AFFF firefighting foam use at Miami International Airport, Homestead Air Reserve Base, and industrial sites over the shallow Biscayne Aquifer. A water softener system will not remove PFAS — a water purification RO system removes the large majority at the tap, and a whole-house PFAS system treats every fixture.
What size water softener system do I need for a Miami home?
Sizing is hardness × household size. For most Miami-Dade households of 2–4 people at 12–16 GPG, a 48,000-grain water softener system is the right fit. Hialeah, Miami Springs, Doral, and larger households at the top of the range should step up to a 64,000-grain system. Miami Beach condos and 1–3 person homes are usually well served by a 40,000-grain unit. Homestead and Redland homes on private wells are a different calculation entirely — call us.
Why does my Miami water taste and smell chemical?
WASD disinfects with chloramine, which is chlorine combined with ammonia. It's deliberately more stable than free chlorine so it persists through the distribution system, and that persistence is exactly why it's harder to filter out. Standard activated carbon underperforms against chloramines. You want either a catalytic carbon system at the point of entry or a water conditioner with KDF media, and an RO system at the kitchen tap for drinking and cooking.
Are water softeners restricted or banned anywhere in Miami-Dade?
We found no salt-based water softener discharge ban for Miami-Dade County or the City of Miami. Some municipalities elsewhere in the country restrict brine discharge where reclaimed water is used for irrigation, and individual Miami-Dade municipalities set their own plumbing permit requirements. Before you order, call 785-661-2241 and we'll confirm what applies to your address — and if a restriction does exist where you live, we'll point you to a salt-free water conditioner instead.
Florida removed fluoride from tap water. Does that change what filter I need?
It changes your priorities. SB 700, signed in May 2025 and effective July 1, 2025, bars Florida water systems from adding fluoride. Miami-Dade commissioners had already voted to stop in May 2025. Naturally occurring fluoride remains in Florida groundwater at roughly 0.14 mg/L on average — far below the level that would justify a dedicated fluoride filter. If you were planning to buy a bone char carbon system for fluoride reduction, that budget is better spent on PFAS reduction and hardness in Miami.
If I have a water softener system, do I still need an RO system?
Yes, and they aren't substitutes. A water softener system removes calcium and magnesium by ion exchange — that's it. It does not remove PFOS, PFOA, lead, haloacetic acids, trihalomethanes, or sodium. A water purification RO system installed under your kitchen sink removes the large majority of all of those at the point where you drink and cook. In Miami specifically, the softener protects your water heater and plumbing; the RO system handles the contaminants WASD is under a federal deadline to fix.
Does AFWFilters ship water softeners and filters to Miami?
Yes — free shipping to every Miami-Dade ZIP code on orders over $100, including Miami Beach, Key Biscayne, Hialeah, Doral, Kendall, Cutler Bay, Homestead, and the surrounding municipalities. Most orders ship within 1–2 business days. Every system comes with written installation instructions, programming guides, and video walkthroughs, plus phone support at 785-661-2241 if you get stuck.
