Jacksonville Water Guide — Since 1998

JEA Publishes Your ZIP's Hardness. Most Are "Very Hard."

Jacksonville's water comes from the Floridan Aquifer, a thousand feet down through limestone — which is why JEA's own ZIP-code table shows Nocatee at 22 grains per gallon, Southside and Baymeadows at 20, and most of urban Duval between 13 and 18. JEA aerates and ozonates to strip the sulfur smell. It does not soften. That part is yours.

Florida banned water fluoridation statewide — effective July 1, 2025. Governor DeSantis signed SB 700, the "Florida Farm Bill," on May 15, 2025. It doesn't use the word fluoride — it prohibits water systems from adding additives that aren't on an approved list, which has the effect of banning fluoridation. Ninety-seven water providers across 27 Florida counties stopped fluoridating on July 1, 2025, per the Florida Department of Health. Naturally occurring fluoride remains in Florida groundwater, averaging about 0.14 mg/L. What this means for you: if fluoride reduction was on your shopping list, take it off and spend the money on hardness and sulfur instead — the two things that actually define Jacksonville water. Call 785-661-2241 and we'll re-spec.

Six Reasons Jacksonville Tap Water Needs Treatment

JEA runs dozens of plants, each fed by its own wells into the Floridan Aquifer — hardness alone spans 7 to 22 GPG inside a single utility's territory, which is why a system sized off a "Jacksonville average" is usually the wrong system.

?

22 GPG at the Top of the Range

Nocatee's published hardness of 22 grains per gallon is more than double the national average. At that level, scale insulates your water heater element within a couple of years, cuts efficiency, and takes years off appliance life. Ponte Vedra, St. Johns, and the 32092/32095 corridor sit right behind it. A water softener system is the fix.
See water softener systems →
?

The Sulfur Smell Is Structural, Not Occasional

Hydrogen sulfide occurs naturally in Floridan Aquifer groundwater. JEA aerates at every plant and ozonates at two specifically to strip it — excellent practice that still doesn't guarantee an odor-free glass at every tap, particularly at the ends of long distribution runs. An iron & sulfur filter finishes the job.
See iron & sulfur filters →
⚗️

Trihalomethanes from Chlorine Disinfection

JEA disinfects with chlorine before water enters 4,600+ miles of distribution mains. Individual monitoring locations recorded TTHM results above the 80 ppb standard during 2023, even though system-wide annual averages stayed compliant. A catalytic carbon filter or RO system reduces both taste and byproducts.
See catalytic carbon systems →
☢️

Radium in Deep Limestone Groundwater

The Floridan Aquifer runs through hundreds of feet of ancient limestone, and naturally occurring radionuclides come with that geology across Florida. A reverse osmosis system at the kitchen tap is the standard point-of-use answer for radium.
See drinking RO systems →
?️

Lead in Pre-1987 Jacksonville Plumbing

JEA's system-wide lead levels sit well below the EPA action level — the source water isn't the problem. Homes built before the 1986 solder ban are. If your house predates 1987, a point-of-use RO system at the kitchen sink is the direct fix.
See drinking RO systems →
✅

Softening Makes Water Slightly More Aggressive

This comes straight from JEA: softened water is slightly more aggressive toward metals, so in a house with copper pipes and lead-soldered joints, softening can increase what leaches into your water. Not a reason to skip a softener — a reason to pair one with point-of-use RO and know your plumbing vintage first.

How Hard Is Your Jacksonville ZIP Code's Water?

JEA doesn't run one plant — it runs dozens, each fed by its own wells into the Floridan Aquifer, and hardness tracks which plant serves you. JEA states it plainly: hardness is highest near St. Johns Forest and lowest around Cecil Commerce Center — a 7 to 22 GPG spread inside a single utility's territory.

Water Softener Systems for Jacksonville Homes

JEA aerates, ozonates, and disinfects. It does not soften — and it says so directly, noting that a household softener or ion-exchange system is the way to treat hard water. A properly sized water softener system is the single highest-return purchase most Jacksonville homeowners make on their plumbing.

Jacksonville Best Seller

48k Water Softener System — Fleck 5600SXT, 10% Crosslink Resin

The right unit for most of urban Duval — Riverside, Arlington, Mandarin, the Beaches — where JEA's published hardness lands between 13 and 17 GPG. Demand-metered regeneration cycles on actual water use, not a timer.

13–17 GPG 2–4 People Demand-Metered 10% Resin
64k Water Softener System
Nocatee / Ponte Vedra Pick

64k Water Softener System — Fleck 5600SXT, 10% Crosslink Resin

Built for the 18–22 GPG corridor: Nocatee, Ponte Vedra, St. Johns, Southside, Deerwood, Baymeadows. Also right for a 3–5 person household anywhere in the 17 GPG band, where a 48k unit would regenerate too often.

18–22 GPG 3–5 People Iron-Capable Demand-Metered
80k Water Softener System
Large Home / Extreme Hardness

80k Water Softener System — Fleck 5600SXT

For 22 GPG water in a large house with a high fixture count. At Nocatee hardness with five or more people, a 64k unit regenerates too frequently — the capacity headroom pays for itself in salt and water savings.

Salt-Based Water Softener System vs. Salt-Free Water Conditioner — Which Fits a Jacksonville Home?

Salt-Based Water Softener System

  • Physically removes calcium and magnesium by ion exchange
  • The only approach that fully eliminates scale at 17–22 GPG
  • Proven at JEA's upper hardness band, where conditioning alone underdelivers
  • Demand-metered valves keep salt and water use down
  • Pays back in 2–3 years through appliance and water-heater life
  • Adds sodium and slightly increases aggressiveness toward metals — pair with point-of-use RO in a pre-1987 house
  • Needs salt and a brine tank

Salt-Free Water Conditioner for Hard Water

  • No salt, no brine, no added sodium, no discharge
  • Doesn't increase water's aggressiveness toward copper and lead solder
  • Genuinely well-suited to the Westside and Cecil Commerce ZIPs at 7–8 GPG
  • Good option for a sodium-restricted household
  • Does not remove calcium and magnesium
  • Underdelivers at Nocatee and Ponte Vedra hardness — be honest about 22 GPG

Water Purification RO Systems for Jacksonville Drinking Water

Your softener handles scale. It does nothing about trihalomethanes, radium, or lead from pre-1987 solder joints — and because softening slightly increases how aggressive water is toward metals, a water purification RO system on the kitchen tap is more important in an older Jacksonville house, not less.

Water Conditioners for Hard Water — Jacksonville Options

At the lower end of JEA's range — the 7–8 GPG Westside and Cecil Commerce ZIPs — a full salt-based softener may be more system than the water calls for. Water conditioners for hard water cover that ground, and the multi-media units solve more than one problem in a single tank.

Why Jacksonville Homeowners Choose AFW Filters

Since 1998, we've matched thousands of homeowners to the right system for their specific water — not a generic recommendation.

01

We Size Off Your ZIP Code, Not a City Average

JEA publishes hardness by ZIP for a reason: 32081 is 22 GPG and 32234 is 7 GPG. Those are different systems. Tell us your ZIP and we'll pull the JEA figure before we quote you anything. A "Jacksonville softener" is not a real product.

02

We'll Tell You What Softening Does to Copper Pipes

JEA notes on its own hardness page that softened water is slightly more aggressive and can leach more metal from copper pipes with lead-soldered joints. Most retailers won't mention it. We will, because it changes the recommendation for pre-1987 homes in Riverside, Springfield, and Murray Hill.

Very well packaged order. The detailed instructions are very thorough and helpful. Everything works as it should. One item was in back order and it was communicated well. The bracket they use for big blue is well made and strict compared to ones I have had in the past.

Mon–Fri, 8am–4pm CT
How hard is Jacksonville tap water — and does it really vary that much by ZIP code?
It varies enormously, and JEA publishes the proof. Its Water Hardness Levels table shows 32081 (Nocatee) at 22 grains per gallon and 32234 (Baldwin) at 7 — a threefold spread inside one utility. JEA states that hardness is highest near St. Johns Forest and lowest around Cecil Commerce Center, because different water plants draw from different wells into the Floridan Aquifer. Thirty-six of the forty-one ZIPs in the table are classified "Very Hard." Most of urban Duval sits between 13 and 18 GPG.
What size water softener system do I need for a Jacksonville home?
Match the capacity to your published ZIP hardness and household size. At 13–17 GPG with 2–4 people — Riverside, Arlington, Mandarin, the Beaches — a 48,000-grain water softener system is the standard fit. At 18–22 GPG — Nocatee, Ponte Vedra, St. Johns, Southside, Deerwood — step up to a 64,000-grain system, or an 80,000-grain unit for five-plus people at Nocatee hardness. At 7–8 GPG on the Westside, a 40,000-grain system or a salt-free conditioner is usually enough.
Why does my Jacksonville water smell like rotten eggs?
That's hydrogen sulfide, naturally present in Floridan Aquifer groundwater rather than something that got into the system. JEA's treatment process is built around it — water flows through an aerator at the plant specifically to strip the sulfur odor, and two plants use ozone for sulfide removal and taste-and-odor control. It's effective, and it still doesn't guarantee every tap on every day, especially at the far end of a distribution run or on a private well. An air injection iron and sulfur filter oxidizes hydrogen sulfide out chemical-free at the point of entry.
Is a water conditioner for hard water enough, or do I need a full softener?
It depends entirely on your ZIP. At 7–8 GPG — Baldwin, Argyle, Cecil Commerce, Orange Park — a water conditioner for hard water is a reasonable choice, and it avoids adding sodium or increasing the water's aggressiveness toward copper plumbing. At 18–22 GPG in Nocatee or Ponte Vedra, conditioning alone will disappoint you; only ion exchange physically removes calcium and magnesium at that level. The AFW City-Pro sits in between, combining softening resin with KDF media for hardness plus metals and taste.
Does softening my water damage my pipes?
Not damage, but JEA does flag a real trade-off on its own hardness page: softened water is slightly more aggressive, meaning it leaches more metal from pipes. In a house with copper piping and lead-soldered joints — anything built before the 1986 solder ban — that can increase what ends up in your drinking water. We think that's a reason to install the softener for your appliances and a point-of-use RO system for your drinking tap, not a reason to skip a softener in 20 GPG water. If your house predates 1987, ask us about this specifically before you order.
Are there PFAS in Jacksonville water?
Available reporting indicates PFAS was not detected above EPA limits in JEA's municipal supply during the 2023–2025 federal monitoring period — a real advantage over several other Florida cities. That said, PFAS monitoring is ongoing nationally and results change between reporting cycles. If PFAS is a concern for your household, check JEA's current annual Water Quality Report and call us; we'll tell you honestly whether the systems you're looking at are PFAS-rated.
Florida stopped adding fluoride to tap water. Does that change what I should buy?
It changes your priorities. SB 700, effective July 1, 2025, prohibits Florida water systems from adding fluoride, and 97 providers across 27 counties stopped that day per the Florida Department of Health. Naturally occurring fluoride remains in Florida groundwater at roughly 0.14 mg/L on average — nowhere near the level that justifies a dedicated fluoride filter. If fluoride reduction was on your list, spend that budget on hardness and sulfur instead. Those are the two things that actually define Jacksonville water.
Does AFW Filters ship water softeners and filters to Jacksonville?
Yes — free shipping on orders over $100 to every ZIP in JEA's service territory, covering Duval County and northwest St. Johns: Nocatee, Ponte Vedra, Mandarin, Southside, Arlington, the Beaches, Riverside, Springfield, Northside, the Westside, Baldwin, and Orange Park. Most orders ship in 1–2 business days with written instructions, programming guides, and video walkthroughs. Phone support at 785-661-2241 if you get stuck mid-install.

Tell Us Your ZIP. We'll Pull Your Hardness and Size the System.

Whether you're in Nocatee at 22 grains fighting scale you can see, in Mandarin chasing a sulfur smell, in Riverside with pre-1987 copper and solder, or out on the Westside at 7 grains wondering whether you need anything at all — we'll size the water softener system, water conditioner for hard water, or water purification RO system off your actual JEA number.
